We are not focusing on one particular instrument right here, just focusing on some broader issues. So let’s compare this to some references and try to identify some problem areas. So let’s have a quick listen to this mix, it’s very early stages, I’ve done a volume balance and some mix bus processing, and we are just trying to do some big broad sweeps to take the mix in the right direction. Figure out what you are trying to achieve, why you are trying to achieve it and then that will quickly tell you how you go about achieving that intention. Decide what you are going to do before you load up your equalizer. Now, the same thing applies to mixing and it most definitely applies to EQ too, because if you just load up an equalizer and start playing around with EQ, for the sake of it, because you feel like you need to and you are doing that without intention – sure you might change the sound, you will end up somewhere, but is that where you want to be? And just using EQ for the sake of it, is one of the biggest mistakes I see amongst musicians who produce their own music. Sure you’ll get somewhere but who knows where, and who knows if it’s a good place to be. To me, this is kind of like getting in your car, driving it full speed, but in no particular direction.
